GiveToLocal kicked off 2021 announcing support for six new sports including rowing.
And Trentham RC were quick to take the opportunity to secure sustainable funding for their club.
Parent Representative Helen Butters has been a part of the club for six years — since her son joined the juniors’ section and progressed to become a coach.
Helen thinks rowing is an incredible sport for young people and hopes she can bring more to the club after lockdown.
“From a parent’s perspective rowing is a fabulous sport for children as it encourages commitment,” she said.
“You’re part of a crew so there’s more expectation that you turn up. It isn’t easy as the training takes resilience and a lot of commitment to fitness.
“But that commitment brings so many opportunities. My son’s been all over the place and he achieved a place at the Team GB camp. The opportunities it’s opened up have been amazing.”
The number of young people joining Trentham has dropped dramatically over the last year due to lockdown restrictions preventing coaches from recruiting at schools.
Helen wants to reverse this trend as soon as possible and, with the help of GiveToLocal, the club will be ready to hit the ground running with their ‘Learn to Row’ programme as soon as restrictions are lifted.
“We try to go into schools and give children who would never think about rowing the opportunity to get involved,” added Helen.
“With GiveToLocal we want to open the club up. I think, quite often, people think of rowing as quite an elite sport.
“We want to break those barriers down and say ‘actually, it’s a sport that anyone can do and everybody’s welcome at Trentham!’.
“If we could secure the extra funding through GiveToLocal it would mean we could widen our scope, invest in more equipment, encourage more beginners and overall become more inclusive.”
