Gabby has covered everything from the Olympics to the Premier League and shares GiveToLocal’s passion for sport.
When she sat down with Justin Lockwood for the sixth episode of the GiveToLocal podcast the pair chatted about the face of professional sport with no fans…and how excited they are to get that atmosphere back.
“I’ve done so many [football] matches during the pandemic,” said Gabby.
“I’ve been up to St. James’ Park just before the new year and I’ve been all over the country at different grounds and it just doesn’t [feel] normal.
“I was at Stamford Bridge for the FA Cup fourth round tie and you don’t ever get used to the feeling of not having fans there. It’s just horrible – awful!”
A keen Newcastle United fan since her time in the North East at Durham University, Gabby misses the electric atmosphere of a packed Premier League ground.
“We need the passion that comes from the crowd,” she added.
“The emotion is so wonderful and that’s part of why we love the game – because people care.
“Sports is a unifying experience isn’t it? That’s why we love it. So, sport played like it is at the moment feels like a computer game or something.
“Obviously it still matters to the players and us at home but it doesn’t have that added layer of emotion that I think we all need and crave.”
